For a server to function effectively as a firewall and proxy server, having at least two Network Interface Cards (NICs) is essential. One NIC is typically connected to the internal network, while the other NIC connects to the external network or the internet. This separation of interfaces allows the server to monitor and control traffic coming in and going out between the two networks.

Using two NICs facilitates the implementation of security measures, as the firewall can inspect and filter traffic based on rules configured for each network segment. Additionally, this setup permits the proxy server to efficiently manage requests for external resources from internal users, acting as an intermediary and improving security as well as performance.

Having a single NIC in bridge mode or multiple IP addresses on a single NIC may allow some level of networking function but does not provide the necessary segmentation between internal and external traffic, which is critical for effective firewall and proxy server operation.
